アメリカ・オレゴン州ポートランドにて、伝統技術・技法を基盤とした設計・デザイン、ならびに現地アメリカ人職人への技術支援という形で携わらせていただいているプロジェクトです

本計画は、戸田工務店とKominka Collectiveとの協働により進められており、今回、建築主様および現地工務店との最終的な仕様確認のため、いくつかのサンプルを携え渡米いたしました
シアトルを経由し、ポートランド空港からプロジェクトの拠点となるポートランドのゲストハウスに入りました

現地では、アメリカ人の左官職人や大工職人と共に、弊社オリジナル配合による左官仕上げの検証や、日本の伝統技術に関する打ち合わせを予定しています。素材の特性や納まり、施工方法について一つひとつ確認しながら進める、非常に密度の高い協議となりそうです

日本の伝統技術を海外へ伝えるということは、単に技法を伝承することではありません
木や土と向き合う姿勢、自然素材の特性を活かす考え方、そして建物を永く使い継いでいくという価値観を共有することでもあります

異なる風土や文化の中で、それらの技術や思想がどのように受け入れられ、新たな形へと発展していくのか
その可能性を共に探ることは、私たちにとっても多くの学びをもたらす、大変意義深い取り組みです

今回の打ち合わせを通じて、日本の伝統技術の可能性をさらに広げるとともに、国や文化を越えて育まれる新たなものづくりの在り方を模索してまいります

 

This is a project we are involved in Portland, Oregon, USA, where we are contributing through design based on traditional techniques and methods, as well as providing technical support to local American craftsmen.

This project is being carried out through a collaboration between Toda Komuten and Kominka Collective. For this trip, we traveled to the U.S. with several samples to finalize specifications with the client and the local construction company.
After stopping in Seattle, we arrived at Portland Airport and checked into the guesthouse in Portland, which will serve as our project base.

While there, we plan to work with American plasterers and carpenters to test our proprietary plaster finish formula and hold meetings regarding traditional Japanese techniques. It promises to be a very intensive series of discussions, as we proceed by carefully verifying each detail—from material properties and fit-and-finish to construction methods.

Conveying traditional Japanese techniques overseas is not merely about passing down specific methods.
It also involves sharing our approach to working with wood and earth, our philosophy of utilizing the inherent properties of natural materials, and our values regarding the long-term use and preservation of buildings.

How will these techniques and philosophies be received and evolve into new forms within different climates and cultures?
Exploring these possibilities together is a deeply meaningful endeavor that will also provide us with many valuable lessons.

Through this meeting, we aim to further expand the potential of traditional Japanese craftsmanship while exploring new approaches to craftsmanship that transcend national and cultural boundaries.
